THE REALIZATION OF A TIMBER STRUCTURE ADDICTION FOR THIS 50’S HOUSE BECOMES AN OPPORTUNITY TO FIND A NEW IMAGE FOR THE WHOLE BUILDING.
Lying on the mountain slopes of Lake Maggiore, this house overlooks the panorama of Prealps and in the distance, the lake. The project to renovate and expand the house BM establishes a subtle dialogue between the vernacular tradition of the 50s and a contemporary living. The decision to expand the building based on a wooden structural plan, offers an opportunity to renovate and remodel the existing space, creating two separate apartments on different levels.
At the center of the two apartments on each floor, large tiled stove heaters define the large spaces, creating a Cartesian atmosphere. On the first floor, the opposite is true, the spaces are less defined and blend fluidly into each other. The stove heaters represent the heart of the house.
The building has been designed with simple construction processes according to bio-ecological and bioclimatic regulations: the south side which is most exposed to solar radiation is protected by wooden balconies; the exterior west side is ventilated, with cork insulation, fiber hemp and wood, featuring natural lime plasters. The extension is made of wood structural type balloon frame.
